Questions We Asked JL...

What is your favorite writing fuel? Coffee is a MUST, of course. I also love Hall's Defense Vitamin C drops -- I'm addicted to them, I think.

What is one thing you wish you'd known BEFORE you started querying? Don't agonize over word count, or whether your book is in Courier or Times Roman font, or page count. Just make sure to give the facts about the book ('a romantic suspense of approximately 70000 words') and a good hook ('Imagine everyone in your town died. Now imagine you didn't.')

Do you have any advice for beating writer's block? Start a new story. I'm writing "Free Reads" and I find that really helps me break through my block. Most of my books are in first-person (the heroine's POV), so I'm choosing a scene from each book and writing it in the hero's POV. It REALLY helps get me back on track!

What is the longest stretch of time you've ever devoted solely to writing or revising a manuscript? How did you get through it? Writing? Maybe five months, but that wasn't continuous. I put the book down and came back to it. I wrote another book in between.

Revising? I normally write the book, go back and read it and tweak, then I hand it off to my critique partner. Once she returns it to me, I tweak again. So revisions are a few days?

I guess I don't really keep track of these kinds of things -- I don't find that I need to "get through it" -- I tend to enjoy the whole process. Of course, I've never had extensive rewrites ... the most I had to do for one editor was rework four or five scenes, which took me a few days to think about then do. And in the end, she was probably right to have me re-do them (although I'll reserve judgement until the book comes out!)
